REVERSE PAINTING ON GLASS
WITH OIL PAINT & GOLD LEAF
by Reverse Glass Painter Nancy Mirek

Reverse Painting On Glass has been practiced for a long time in the Orient. In America, its greatest popularity happened during the early 1800s. Reverse Painting on Glass were utilized in clocks and some mirrors.

This unique art form requires special skills because the artist paints the design on the back side of the glass for viewing from the front side.

Reverse Painting On Glass of non symmetrical scenes must be painted in mirror image. When the glass is viewed from the front, up close objects are painted on first. The background objects viewed are painted on last.

Gold Leaf, if included in the design goes on before any painting is done. A single mistake may ruin the work and the artist would have to start over. The artist must have art skills and skills in Reverse Painting of Glass both.
It is believed by many that women living in the communities where the early shelf clocks were manufactured did the Reverse Painting on Glass artistry. Note that there is a lack of evidence of this or almost nothing is known of the techniques used during that period.
Reverse Glass Painting, used in shelf clocks in America, took place in the period from approximately 1815 through 1850. A manufactured application process was to become what is now known as the modern decal had replaced it. Reverse Painting nearly became extinct. During the Victorian era for a brief time it enjoyed resurgence.

Eglomise is a more elegant name for the art form, as used by the The French. A French (or Swiss) decorator named Glomi, painted in Gold Leaf on glass and is so honored. An Eglomise is a representative of Gilt on Glass. The terminology often is used for any painted glass.

For a lesser value clock, an appropriate compromise would be "Screen Painted" and "Screen Painted-finished by hand".

Note! Dial is translucent & is lighted from the rear.
